“Nano-Excitonic Transistor” Processes Data at Lightspeed 2023

What gives Marvel’s Ant-Man such powerful energy? His suit transistors boost weak signals for processing. A “nano-excitonic transistor” was developed by POSTECH researchers led by Professor Kyoung-Duck Park and Yeonjeong Koo from the Department of Physics and a Russian team led by Professor Vasily Kravtsov from ITMO University. Intralayer and interlayer excitons in heterostructure-based semiconductors overcome transistor limits in this novel device.

Due to the free conversion between light and material in their electrically neutral states, excitons are key to developing a next-generation light-emitting element with less heat generation and a quantum information technology light source. In a semiconductor hetero-bilayer—a stack of two semiconductor monolayers—intralayer excitons are horizontal and interlayer excitons are vertical.

Two excitons emit optical signals with distinct lights, durations, and coherence times. Selective control of the two optical signals could permit a two-bit exciton transistor. Due to semiconductor heterostructures’ non-homogeneity, interlayer excitons’ low luminous efficiency, and light’s diffraction limit, controlling intra- and interlayer excitons in nanoscale regions was difficult.

The scientists previously proposed pushing semiconductor materials with a nano-tip to control excitons in nano-level regions. For the first time, the researchers used polarized light on the tip to remotely regulate exciton density and brightness efficiency without touching them.

An optical computer will require the nano-excitonic transistor.

This approach, which uses a photonic nanocavity and a spatial light modulator, controls excitons reversibly, minimizing semiconductor material damage. The nano-excitonic transistor can process vast amounts of data at light speed with no heat energy loss.

Honor is preparing to introduce the Honor X50i mid-range smartphone in China. Google CEO Concerned AI misuse might hurt 2023

Sundar Pichai, the chief executive officer of Google, stated on Sunday that he was concerned about the urgency of deploying artificial intelligence technology and feared that it could be used for malicious purposes.

Mr. Pichai stated on CBS’s ’60 Minutes’ that what kept him awake at night was “the urgency to work and deploy it in a beneficial manner.” However, improper deployment can be extremely hazardous. And we do not yet have all the answers, and technology is advancing rapidly.”

He also emphasized the importance of avoiding what he termed “race conditions,” in which AI product developers from different companies attempt to introduce their products first.

Microsoft Edge tries a desktop-pinnable sidebar 2023

Microsoft Edge is evaluating a new sidebar-enhancing feature. Edge Canary version 114.0.1789.0 allows users to detach and deploy the browser’s sidebar to the desktop, as reported by GeekerMag (via Windows Central) earlier.

While I was unable to test the feature myself, Viney Dhiman of GeekerMag demonstrates how it works in the video embedded below. Simply click the “Detach from Edge” icon at the foot of the sidebar, and Edge will pin the sidebar to the right side of your desktop.

Bing’s AI-powered chatbot and picture generator are accessible without a webpage.

The sidebar will remain visible even when Edge is minimized, allowing you to access Bing’s artificial intelligence chatbot and other tools without a webpage being loaded. To reconnect the sidebar, click the same icon used to detach it. According to Windows Central, this feature is only trickling out to a subset of Edge Canary and Dev users, so even if you have access to both channels, you may not see it.
